On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, renowned Gambian kora virtuoso and activist Sona Jobarteh will take the stage at Brooklyn Bowl, weaving together West African griot traditions with a vision for social change. As the first female kora master from a renowned griot lineage, Jobarteh preserves her musical heritage while innovating for the future, using her artistry to address themes of identity, education, and cultural preservation.
Beyond her musicianship, Jobarteh is a dedicated humanitarian and founder of The Gambia Academy, a pioneering institution focused on educational reform across Africa. Through her performances, she amplifies messages of empowerment, forging a deep connection between tradition and progress.
Presented by the World Music Institute in collaboration with Brooklyn Bowl, this concert is part of the Changemakers Series, spotlighting artists who use music as a force for transformation.
