The single cover for Zunzun Baba by Rita Donte features a street scene in Havana, Cuba. A performer on stilts is dressed in a colorful costume resembling a hummingbird, with iridescent wings spread wide, a green-scaled bodysuit, and a feathered mask. Below, a woman in a flowing red dress and bold yellow accessories leans against the wall. The textured, weathered buildings and the "Habana" street sign anchor the image in a rich, cultural setting. The typography is minimal.

Humming Into the Spotlight: Rita Donte Debuts with ‘Zunzun Baba’

Cuban singer-songwriter Rita Donte has announced her debut album, Ritual, set for release on March 28 via Ansonia Records. Leading the album’s rollout is the single Zunzun Baba, accompanied by a visually striking video shot in her hometown of Havana.

Now based in Baja California, Mexico, Donte’s music combines Cuban influences with the rhythms of son jarocho from Veracruz. Her work reflects a journey of resilience, transformation, and artistic self-discovery.

Born in Havana in 1989, Donte was immersed in music from an early age. Initially training as a dancer for over 15 years, she later shifted her focus due to health concerns. A chance encounter with musician Juan Carlos Piñol in a doctor’s waiting room led her to explore singing, sparking a new creative path. She soon became involved in theater and music, embracing a more independent artistic identity.

In 2014, Donte traveled to Mexico for a festival and decided to stay, deepening her study of son jarocho under maestros like Honorio Robledo. As a consequence, she co-founded the jarocho project Incienso Mulato.

Her artistic journey took a pivotal turn when she met Venezuelan musician and producer Gustavo Guerrero (aka Augusto Bracho) in Mexico City. Their collaboration led to the songs featured on Ritual, marking Donte’s official debut as a recording artist.

Ritual arrives March 28, 2025, via Ansonia Records.
