Flushing Town Hall will host the New York City debut of Sangjaru, an innovative Korean folk fusion ensemble, on Friday, February 21. Based in Seoul, South Korea, Sangjaru is renowned for its dazzling mix of traditional Korean folk music with gypsy swing, funk, rock, and improvisation.
The trio includes guitarist and leader Sungyoon Cho; percussionist Kwon Hyochang, who plays the janggu (hourglass drum) and kkwaenggwari (small gong); and Nam Seonghun on the ajaeng (bowed zither). Together, they push the boundaries of Korean folk traditions while embracing contemporary global influences.
Sangjaru’s name reflects their creative spirit, combining “sangja” (box) and “jaru” (sack), the band symbolizes both structure and adaptability, aiming to innovate within the framework of Korea’s musical heritage.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate the Lunar New Year and share Korean music and culture with new audiences during our first U.S. tour,” said Sungyoon Cho. “Performing at Flushing Town Hall for our New York City debut is truly special.”
Winners of the 2019 Sori Frontier competition at the Jeonju International Sori Festival, Sangjaru has earned acclaim for its originality and groundbreaking music. The competition highlights emerging Korean musicians with global appeal, and Sangjaru’s recognition underscores their role as ambassadors of modern Korean music.
“We are absolutely delighted to introduce Sangjaru, an extraordinary band from South Korea, to the diverse borough of Queens as part of their US debut tour,” said Ellen Kodadek, Executive and Artistic Director of Flushing Town Hall, a Smithsonian affiliate. “Flushing Town Hall is the only place in New York City where you can witness this phenomenal band live. Don’t miss this unforgettable experience!”
