La Sonora Mazurén: A Cathartic Fusion of South American Rhythms in Magnetismo Animal

La Sonora Mazurén – Magnetismo Animal (Barbés Records, 2024)

La Sonora Mazurén, a rising name in Colombia’s indie-tropical scene, has released Magnetismo Animal under Barbés Records. Rooted in traditional South American rhythms, the band mixes Peruvian huayno and chicha; Colombian gaita, vallenato, cumbia; and Ecuadorian sanjuanitos with an experimental, danceable twist. This magnetic fusion creates a genre-defying, psychedelic roots wonderland.

With synthesizers and electric guitars complementing accordion and percussion, the band draws inspiration from artists like Polibio Mayorga and Eblis Álvarez of Meridian Brothers, who also produced their debut album. The result is a fresh take on the psychedelic sonido tropical.

La Sonora Mazurén’s debut album, Bailando Con Extraños, led to extensive tours across Europe in 2023 and 2024. Magnetismo Animal, recorded primarily in Normandy, France, continues the journey with hypnotic, trance-like tracks, named after Franz Mesmer’s theory of animal magnetism.

The band’s lineup features key figures in Bogotá’s music scene: Ivan Medellín (keyboards/accordion) and Nicolás Eckardt (bass), both from Romperayo, and percussionists/vocalists Giovanna Mogollón and Diana Sanmiguel, who are also members of La Perla.
