Mast Qalandar: A Contemporary Fusion of Sufi Tradition and Sarod Mastery

The latest rendition of “Mast Qalandar” breathes new life into a classic Sufi folk song cherished across South Asia for centuries. This version is a collaboration between vocalist Devika and sarod maestros Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash.

Written in tribute to the revered Sufi saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, “Mast Qalandar” has been a unifying anthem for South Asians worldwide. The new interpretation presents a contemporary Sufi sound, combining traditional elements with modern electronic arrangements to create a spiritual experience that resonates across cultures.

Devika is a chart-topping singer and songwriter trained in Hindustani classical music in India. She later explored fusion genres after moving to the U.S. for her studies, incorporating Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu influences into her music. Her collaborations extend to artists like Smash Mouth and Bohemia, reflecting her versatility and cross-cultural appeal.

Amaan Ali Bangash, the eldest son of sarod legend Amjad Ali Khan, represents the seventh generation of the Senia Bangash musical lineage. Trained by his father, Amaan debuted on stage at just eight years old. Known for his precision, bold style, and dedication to tradition, he has earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading sarod players.

Like his elder brother, Ayaan Ali Bangash carries the family’s musical heritage, combining tradition with a forward-looking approach. Ayaan began performing publicly at the age of eight and has since developed a versatile style that bridges genres.
