Milap Unveils Autumn 2024 Season of Indian Music and Culture in Liverpool

Milap has announced its Autumn 2024 season of Indian Music and Culture, set to take place across the Liverpool city region starting in September. The program will feature some of India’s most distinguished musicians alongside emerging talent from the UK, offering a rare opportunity to experience masterful performances on a UK stage.

The season kicks off Saturday, 28th September 2024 with a homecoming concert by bass virtuoso and Indo-jazz pioneer Shez Raja at Future Yard in Wirral. Known for his high-energy performances and unique Indo-jazz-funk sound,

Following this, Milap will return to The Tung Auditorium in Liverpool for two performances. The first features Dr. Vijay Rajput, a classical north Indian Hindustani vocalist, who will perform a meditative raga concert, mixing classical, folk, and Bandish compositions.

The second concert will spotlight Rajhesh Vaidhya, a world-renowned veena maestro. Vaidhya’s performance, marked by his exhilarating speed and use of electric strings, is anticipated to be a highlight of the season.

Milap’s program will also include expanded Diwali celebrations across the city region, featuring visual arts, food events, and family-friendly activities. The Diwali festivities will culminate in late October, with events like children’s workshops and the popular Diwali Brunch at Bundobust Liverpool.

The season will conclude with a performance by Dr. Rajeeb Chakraborty at the Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room. A celebrated sarod virtuoso, Chakraborty’s mastery of the instrument and his emotionally resonant performances promise to bring the season to a powerful close.

Milap’s Artist in Residence, and world-renowned tabla maestro Kousic Sen features prominently within this year’s Autumn program: “I always love performing in the musical city of Liverpool. I’m really looking forward to playing with wonderful musicians and friends Dr. Vijay Rajput, Rajeeb Chakraborty and of course Rajhesh Vaidhya. Each of these musicians perform in a completely different style to each other, so I’ll be changing the way I accompany with tabla for each concert. With Vijay’s concert, audiences can expect a calm, meditative experience. It’s always fun and interesting to play with Rajeeb – we both know each other so well and have performed hundreds of concerts together, so we like to challenge each other on stage! I love performing with Carnatic (South Indian classical) musicians whenever I get the opportunity, and Rajhesh Vaidhya is one of the best in the world! Audiences are in for a real treat this season.”
