Muddy Gurdy, Blues and Cajun with hurdy-gurdy

Muddy Gurdy – Seven (Buda Musique, 2024)

In this new release, Seven, blues chanteuse and guitarist Tia Gouttebel joins forces with hurdy-gurdy virtuoso Gilles Chabenat and the versatile percussionist Fabrice Bony. Together, they ingeniously interweave blues, Cajun, and Zydeco.

Gouttebel, a native of Romagnat, France, breathes new life into the Southern Louisiana roots music. On Seven, the rustic echoes of French rural melodies embrace the spirited nuances of Cajun and Zydeco, creating a set of songs that are both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition.

Recorded in intimate and evocative settings, Gouttebel’s journey begins with a stirring interpretation of Hank Williams’s “Jambalaya.” This opening track, featuring the fiddle of Bobby Michot from “Les Frères Michot” and Chabenat’s haunting hurdy-gurdy, was captured in the serene garden of the Frozard plantation house near Arnaudville, Louisiana.

The album’s narrative continues through diverse locales: from the cozy confines of Jeffery and Millie Broussard’s living room in Opelousas, the charming BJ’s Lounge in New Orleans, to the tranquil waters of Lake Martin in Breaux Bridge.
