George Robert Jazz Orchestra & Ivan Lins – Abre Alas (Mills Records, 2024)
Although the album Abre Alas was recorded in 2009, it was not released until 2024. This work is a memorable, joyful, and delightful collaboration between the late Swiss saxophonist and bandleader George Robert and Brazilian composer, singer, and pianist Ivan Lins. Bob Mintzer contributed creative arrangements for George Robert’s European Jazz Orchestra, displaying his enthusiasm for Lins’ compositions by describing the orchestration process as both natural and enjoyable.
Abre Alas, recorded in Switzerland in May 2009, presents seven compositions by Lins, arranged by Mintzer. Lins, performing on the Fender Rhodes electric piano, was accompanied by his guitarist, Leonardo Amuedo. Notably, Mintzer’s vibrant wind arrangements beautifully complement Lins’ intricate compositions.
The album’s repertoire, selected from over twenty compositions, was tested during two concerts in Switzerland before the recording sessions. Lins praised Mintzer’s powerful arrangements, highlighting the project’s international nature, which began with initial meetings in New York and continued with sessions in Tokyo.
Key tracks include the emotive “Abre Alas” from the early 1970s; the lively samba “Madalena”; and a range of Lins’ complex and lyrical pieces such as “Saudades de Casa,” “Começar de Novo,” and “Passarela no Ar.” The big band’s interpretations introduce fresh nuances to each composition.
Additionally, the album features two instrumental tracks by Robert, “Mi Corazón” and “Cancion de Amor,” which align with Lins’ Latin and romantic styles. The album concludes with a unique rendition of “Over the Rainbow,” arranged by Mintzer, highlighting the orchestra’s ability to reimagine classic standards.
