Exceptional Cuban Trumpet Player Yelfris Valdés

Yelfris Valdés, a Cuban composer and trumpet player, commenced his musical career at age 8, studying classical music. By 16, he embarked on professional tours worldwide. Graduating with top honors from The College of Arts in Havana at 25, he collaborated with renowned Cuban musicians, including Buena Vista Social Club, Omara Portuondo, and Sierra Maestra.

During his decade-long tenure with Sierra Maestra, Valdés honed Cuban improvisation and rhythmic intricacies, touring over 50 countries. Notably, in 2010, the band received a Grammy nomination for Best Tropical Album, featuring Valdés’ compositions.

In 2014, Valdés relocated to London, swiftly establishing himself as a sought-after trumpet player. His versatility led to collaborations with international stars like Madonna and The Clash, as well as acclaimed pianist Chucho Valdés and Damon Albarn’s African Express.

Valdés has since collaborated with various UK musicians and contributed to notable projects, including Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Records. In 2018, he released his EP The World Of Eshu Dina, celebrating Yoruba traditions.

Following the EP’s success, Valdés released his project For the Ones… on October 4th, 2023, via Música Macondo Records. This album presents an experimental fusion of classical, jazz, and electronica influences, incorporating Yoruba chants and live instrumentation.

Valdés, drawing inspiration from his Yoruba beliefs, seeks to spread positive energy and truth through his music, bridging cultural and spiritual realms. The album’s opening track, ‘Canto Congo,’ pays homage to his Central African heritage.
