Ṣonṣo, the 20th studio album by Beautiful Nubia and the Roots Renaissance Band, was recorded at the iconic Afrodisia Studio in Lagos and ARTun Soundgrove in Ottawa. It incorporates a rich variety of sounds, riddims and cultures. Ṣonṣo features 15 fresh tracks, including eight in Yoruba, five in English, and one captivating instrumental.
The album’s melodies are uplifting and infectious, weaving seamlessly with lyrics that provoke deep thought. Each reggae and Afro-rooted riddim pulses with an irresistible energy, compelling listeners to move and dance, embodying the true spirit of Beautiful Nubia’s music; entertaining yet profoundly reflective.
Olusegun (Segun) Akinlolu, the creative force behind Beautiful Nubia, was born in 1968 in Ibadan, Nigeria. Before embracing music full-time, he studied veterinary medicine at the University of Ibadan and dedicated eight years to the field. In 1997, he adopted the stage name Beautiful Nubia, a tribute to the ancient Nubian civilization renowned for its cultural richness and historical significance. The following year, he formed the Roots Renaissance Band.
In 2010, Beautiful Nubia launched the EniObanke Music Festival (EMUfest), Nigeria’s pioneering folk and roots music festival, celebrating and promoting indigenous sounds. His contributions to music were recognized in October 2016 when he received an honorary Doctorate in Science (Honoris Causa) in Art from ESEP Le Berger University in the Republic of Benin.
Beautiful Nubia’s music is celebrated for its didactic and philosophical qualities, resonating deeply with emotional and cultural significance. Drawing on rich folkloric traditions and native wisdom, his songs advocate for valuing life, respecting nature, and fostering peaceful coexistence. He uses his music as a vehicle for social justice and personal and community development, championing traditional wisdom as a cornerstone for progress.
