Alterne Delivers a fresh take on Nordic folk

Alterne – Alterne (GO’ Danish Folk Music, 2024)

Alterne, a newly formed dream-folk trio from Northern Europe, gracefully combines traditional Nordic music with modern elements on their new self-titled recording, Alterne. The trio adeptly explores themes like love, nature, and time.

Influenced by their time at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, the trio’s sound is characterized by its powerful, charming and multifaceted vocals; dazzling instrumental virtuosity; transfixing arrangements; and some pieces rich in otherworldly instrumental beauty; and cinematic feel.

While most songs are in Danish, the album features one English track, “Go Down River.” Most of the material on the album are original songs composed by Ida Marie Jessen.

Musicians: Ida Marie Jessen (Denmark) on vocals, violin, and kantele; Oscar Beerten (Belgian) on violin, Hardanger fuddle, guitar, viola, and backing vocals; and Maimu Jõgeda (Estonia) on accordion and stomp box.
