Giuliano Gabriele Delves Into Cathartic Journeys and Southern Italian Influences on Basta!

Giuliano Gabriele – Basta! (Coming Musicart / InOuïe Distribution, 2024)

Giuliano Gabriele‘s latest recording, Basta! is a cathartic exploration of the rhythms from the vibrant South of Italy. It delves into the lives of individuals in constant motion, navigating the intricacies of contemporary systems that confine them. Through a fusion of traditional cadences and contemporary mixes drawing from Mediterranean and world music influences, the album becomes a manifestation of frustrations and fears.

The title track, “Basta!” sets the stage for the entire album, weaving a powerful and enigmatic narrative. The transfixing pizzica rhythm, now widely recognized, immerses us in the enchanting musical landscape of Southern Italy, embracing its wildest and most contemporary expressions.

“Reveillez-Vous,” another gem from the album, addresses a profound yet unconsciously acknowledged awareness of the world. Tackling urgent issues like pollution and climate change, this song utilizes a traditional Neapolitan tammurriata rhythm loop intertwined with French-style accordion sounds, transcending genres.

Musicians: Giuliano Gabriele on vocals and diatonic accordion; Lucia Cremonesi on viola and Calabrian lyre; Eduardo Vessella on tambourine; Gianfranco De Lisi on electric bass; Riccardo Bianchi on drums; Carmine Scialla on bouzouki and battente guitar; Giovanni Aquino on electric guitar and synthesizer; Gianmarco Gabriele, programming; and Martin Meissonnier, programming.

Basta! was produced by the eclectic Martin Meissonnier, known for his work with world music and rock legends like Fela Kuti, Khaled, Alan Stivell, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, Manu Dibango, Papa Wemba, Tony Allen.
