Toumani Diabaté and Ballaké Sissoko‘s New Ancient Strings will be released on vinyl for the first time to commemorate the album’s 25th anniversary. Originally launched on Joe Boyd’s Hannibal Records, this timeless piece of art will be available on March 15, 2024, through Chrysalis Records. Also, a CD version of the album, accompanied by a 16-page booklet, will be released concurrently.
Toumani Diabaté, renowned for his works with Hannibal Records, revisits his roots in acoustic Mande music with New Ancient Strings, a collaborative effort with Ballaké Sissoko. Both Malian artists, part of distinshed musical dynasties, embarked on this project in an intensely musical environment.
Recorded in 1997 during Mali’s independence anniversary in Bamako, New Ancient Strings captures the organic interplay of two Kora virtuosos. The album, devoid of overdubs or added reverb, was recorded in the natural acoustics of the Palais de Congrés, offering a raw and authentic musical experience.
Considered a successor to the landmark 1970 vinyl release Ancient Strings by their fathers, Sidiki Diabaté and Djelimadi Sissoko, New Ancient Strings elevates the artistry to new heights. Upon its release in 1999, it quickly became a cult classic and served as a pivotal moment in the international careers of both Toumani and Ballaké.
Featuring eight instrumental tracks showcasing remarkable virtuosity and lyrical melody, the album offers creative interpretations of traditional Mande repertoire, some dating back to the 13th century. Remastered from the original tapes by Phil Kinrade and cut by Barry Grint at AIR Mastering, the vinyl edition comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve. It includes a four-page insert containing updated liner notes and photos from producer Lucy Durán, packaged in a reverse-board outer sleeve with a belly band.
