Flamenco Guitar Meets Jazz Trumpet on Rasgueo’s Latest Album, ‘Eleven’

Rasgueo – Eleven (Galileo MC GMC105, 2023)

Rasgueo just dropped their latest album, Eleven, and it’s bringing some fresh vibes compared to their previous releases. While the fusion of flamenco guitar and jazz trumpet still defines Rasgueo’s signature sound, there are some cool tweaks in this one.

So, what’s the scoop on Eleven? Well, for starters, they’ve introduced jazz guitar into the mix alongside the flamenco influences, creating a much broader musical spectrum. And guess who joined the party? None other than the Spanish maestro, Bandolero. Indeed, he’s a flamenco expert, percussionist, and drummer extraordinaire. His unique ideas and concepts add a whole new dimension to the album.

What else sets this album apart? A diverse range of influences, my amigos. From flamenco with a touch of malagueña and colombiana, to flamenco-jazz in “First Step”; and even nods to West African beats in “Gute Laune”; along with and Balkan flavors in “Eleven.” They’re also throwing in some jazz ballads with “Christmas Lights” and exploring modern jazz territory in “Secret Mind” and “Dilemma.”

Now, let’s talk about the album’s name. The band, born in 2012, is now hitting the eleven-year mark. Two tracks feature an 11/8 time signature, and guess when they first jammed with Bandolero? Yep, on February 11th, 2023. It’s all coming together in a flavorful and seductive celebration!

Musicians: Martin Auer on trumpet & flügelhorn; José Ruiz Motos “Bandolero” on drums & percussion; Martin Lillich on bass; and Nikos Tsiachris on flamenco and jazz guitars.

Buy Eleven.
