These two iconic albums include a treasure trove of tracks that have been out of reach for over 40 years, making their debut on CD. These albums are not just a blast from the past; they encapsulate the essence of the original dancehall era, featuring some of its biggest hits.
First, some background. Lloyd James, aka King Jammy, is celebrated as one of Jamaica’s most accomplished sound engineers and producers. His legacy traces back to the 1970s, when he collaborated with the legendary dubmaster, King Tubby. In 1976, King Jammy launched his own label, Jammy’s, becoming a powerhouse for superbly crafted tracks by future reggae legends, including Black Uhuru and their iconic debut LP, Love Crisis.
As the dancehall era emerged, King Jammy continued to shape the Jamaican soundscape, championing the new wave with talents like Lincoln ‘Sugar’ Minott. Their collaboration birthed the timeless 1979 LP Bitter Sweet, featuring dancehall anthems like ‘Give The People’ and ‘I’m Not For Sale.’
Moving into the early 1980s, King Jammy’s magic extended to another Jamaican luminary, Johnny Osbourne. The result? Unforgettable dancehall classics like ‘Lend Me Your Chopper,’ ‘Rock And Come On,’ and ‘Water Pumping,’ all gracing the singer’s seminal 1983 album, Reggae On Broadway.
As usual, this Cherry Red reissue has excellent liner notes so you can dig into the history of the artists and producers involved.
