In their latest release, the seasoned bluegrass maestros, Lonesome River Band, once again delve into country music with their single “Blues of the Night.” Drawing on their three-decade history of successfully mining the country music vaults, exemplified by their recent chart-topping hit “Near Mrs.,” the quintet takes a unique turn by reaching back to the early 1960s.
On “Blues of the Night,” Lonesome River Band breathe fresh life into an obscure single from an era when honky-tonk music faced a challenge from the pop-infused “Nashville Sound.” The quintet, including the newest member Adam Miller, who exhibited his skill in the previous hit “Mary Ann is a Pistol,” transforms “Blues of the Night” into a robust expression of pain within the bluegrass genre.
“’Blues of the Night’ is an old country song that Jesse Smathers brought to the band for this session,” notes band leader Sammy Shelor. “Lyrically, it fit our sound to a tee. It features Adam Miller on lead, with Jesse adding some haunting tenor lines that make it a driving Bluegrass song. So much fun to play!”
