Artist Profiles: Lonesome River Band

Contemporary bluegrass act Lonesome River Band was formed in Virginia in 1982. It has grown to be one of the most respected names in bluegrass music.

Lonesome River Band has won several awards, including International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Banjo Player of the Year, and winner of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass.

Award-winning banjo player, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Sammy Shelor leads the group. Lonesome River Band is well known for its stellar lead vocalists and remarkable instrumentalists.

In 2021, the band released Singing Up There, a tribute to the Easter Brothers, a legendary bluegrass and southern gospel group from Mt. Airy, North Carolina.

In February 2022, Lonesome River Band released a song titled “Mary Ann Is A Pistol”, performed by their new mandolinist and singer Adam Miller, who joined the group straight out of East Tennessee State University’s influential Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music Studies program.

In July 2022, the band released an album titled “Heyday”.
