Dorea’s ‘Grande Coisa’ Engaging Songs with a Brazilian Twist

Dorea – Grande Coisa (ajabu!, 2023)

Dorea is a songwriter who has been crafting his musical talents since a young age, formulating his thoughts in school notebooks long before he decided on his life’s path. Over the past decade, he has carved his niche as a musician, strumming his guitar and serenading audiences in Salvador. Six years ago, he embarked on the Tribute to Belchior project, which has garnered a devoted and enthusiastic following. In 2021, he unveiled his first original single, “O Mapa do Brasil,” and now, in 2023, he presents his enthralling debut album, Grande Coisa.

Dorea

Dorea’s lyrical skill shines brightly in Grande Coisa, with profound and authentic poetic songs that draw from a diverse range of musical influences, including rock, folk rock, and Brazilian traditional music. The album comprises ten exquisite tracks, all authored by the artist himself, with one song featuring lyrics adapted from a passage in a book written by his mother. While the intimate album incorporates various genres, Grande Coisa, bears an unmistakable Brazilian perspective and interpretation. Notably, the recording highlights Dorea’s emotive and sweet vocals.

The musical production and minimalist arrangements were meticulously developed by Sebastian Notini, with collaborative elements combing seamlessly as Dorea’s guitar harmonizes with Seba’s percussive and melodic sensibilities, complemented by Carla Suzart’s bass. On a few pieces, Dorea uses chamber style woodwind instruments, masterfully played by Joana Queiroz (bass clarinet and clarinet) and Leandro Tigrão (flute), which adds depth to the album, all under the baton of maestro Per Ekdahl.
