Guillaume Barraud & Mathieu Bélis – Estampes (B&B Productions, 2022)
After ten years of a fruitful partnership, this new project came about in the midst of the pandemic. Composers Mathieu Bélis and Guillaume Barraud teamed up again for a series of free improvisations; and the result is a repertoire of intimate musical pieces.
From the synergy of the piano and the bansuri (North-Indian transverse flute) emerges a language of its own. The striking of the strings and the breath through the bamboo intertwine to deliver a colorful canvas of sounds. It is an ode to journey, an invitation to fly away and explore an eclectic universe of contemporary jazz brewed with western classical music, pop and traditional elements.
From the beginning, the duet considered the possibilities of collaborating with artists who could match their aesthetics. For this first album, they invited guitarist Kevin Seddiki to play the nylon guitar on two of their compositions. The recording sessions and mix were completed in the spring at the Studios de Meudon.
