Violons Barbares – Monsters and Fantastic Creatures (2023)
Violons Barbares is a trio that brings together musicians from Mongolia, Bulgaria, and France. Their music reflects the spirit of nomadic horsemen traveling through the Asian steppe and Balkan regions, carrying violins and drums with them.
Their dazzling performances are characterized by a powerful sense of unity and boundless enthusiasm, featuring a repertoire that encompasses the frenzy of Balkan dances and desert rhythms fused with punk-rock influences. Violons Barbares’ captivating shows transport audiences to the Mongolian steppes, creating a flamboyant experience that ignites passion.
The ensemble’s latest album, titled Monsters and Fantastic Creatures (2023), delves into a hypnotic and mysterious universe. Drawing inspiration from rock music of the Mongolian steppes, blues from Dracula’s castle, ceremonial folk music from Bulgaria, and dark tavern rebetico, Violons Barbares weaves together a joyously energetic set. The virtuoso and unconventional trio immerses listeners in a world populated by demons, vampires, ghosts, monsters, and dragons, some of which evoke terror while others are fantastical and dreamlike.
Having performed globally for fifteen years and released three previous albums, Violons Barbares now presents their exciting fourth album. This project draws from ancient folklore and beliefs in Bulgaria and Mongolia, paying homage to their roots while expressing them through a contemporary musical language. The album features fifteen original tracks, with twelve compositions written in five different languages: Mongolian, Bulgarian, French, German, and English.
In collaboration with illustrator Clotilde Perrin, Violons Barbares has also created a visual component for their album, titled “Monstres et Créatures Fantastiques, Concert Illustré en Live.” Perrin’s drawings complement the album’s themes, providing a unique and immersive visual experience that enhances the listeners’ journey.
