Sámi Musician Ánnámáret Revives Yoik Tradition through Archival Research

Ánnámáret (Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman), the gifted artist hailing from Nuorgam in northernmost Finland, stands as a musician deeply rooted within the Arctic indigenous community of the Sámi. With a fervent ardor, she has embarked upon an intrepid odyssey into the ancestral legacy of her forebears, meticulously dissecting old archive recordings. In this quest for self-discovery, she has unfurled the fascinating yoik, an age-old manifestation of vocal artistry intrinsic to the Sámi tradition. Notably, she draws inspiration from the frost-kissed vistas of Sápmi, the resplendent Arctic terrain, and the ethos of Sámi culture.

Her own band, Ánnámáret Ensemble, has released two albums, Beallječiŋat in 2011 and Gollehelmmot in 2016. These recordings are infused with the essence of yoik. They bear testament to Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman’s consummate craftsmanship, wherein she fervently conceives captivating compositions, composing both melodies and lyrics in the Sámi tongue.

A testament to her profound dedication, from 2012 to 2015, Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman diligently served as the Regional Artist for Sámi Culture, amplifying the resounding echoes of her ancestral heritage.

The culmination of her tireless endeavors yielded Nieguid duovdagat – Dreamscapes, wherein the strains of yoik intertwine seamlessly with the timbres of the Finnish bowed lyre, jouhikko, all delicately interwoven with contemporary live electronics. This work was unveiled to the world in February 2021.

The austere beauty of the tundra serves as both muse and dwelling, as she resides harmoniously with her cherished kin, who are reindeer-herders. Ánnámáret’s profound artistry stems from having matured amidst two divergent cultures. This rich tapestry of experience endows her with an acute understanding of these contrasting realms.

In 2023, she was selected to perform at the influential WOMEX world music showcase.
