Mark Stoffel, a German-born mandolin player residing in southern Illinois, has released a new composition titled “Curious Times.” Inspired by the uncertain atmosphere of the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, Stoffel aimed to capture the somber vibe of that period in his music.
After two years, he had the opportunity to record the song at Crossroads Studios in North Carolina, where he was pleased with how the musicians involved effectively conveyed the tune’s mood. Stoffel collaborated with notable artists such as Gina Furtado, Niall Murphy, Chris Luquette, Ross Sermons, and Tony Creasman on this track.
“Curious Times” is structured in three distinct sections, each featuring a unique melody and rhythm that are interconnected. The song cleverly plays with time signatures and tones, creating a musical pun on the title. Stoffel describes the composition as somber yet upbeat, combining elements of bluegrass and Celtic music. Overall, he expresses his satisfaction with the final result and hopes that listeners will enjoy it.
