Zuco 103, the ambassadors of Brazilectro from Amsterdam, have made a triumphant return with their addictingand/ decidedly upbeat ninth studio album, “Telenova,” released on April 14th under their label, Zuco Sound Records. With a 24-year history at the forefront of the world jazz dance fusion, the band, comprising Lilian Vieira, Stefan Schmid, and Stefan Kruger, has produced an album that represents their most personal and mature work to date.
During the pandemic, the trio re-sampled their choicest musical ideas and melodies and reworked their rhythms to enhance their funk elements. The reduction in social interaction during the lockdown period provided an opportunity for the group to create a more intimate and personal album. Consequently, the arrangements were stripped back, and the listeners were invited in, resulting in a smaller, more cozy and relaxed feel reminiscent of telling stories by the campfire.
Despite the album’s electronic-sounding tracks, the album is bursting with grooves and chord progressions crafted to give Lilian’s vocal lines space to stretch out. Even with the more electronic-sounding tracks, the jazz changes remain evident, offering a beautiful contrast of musical styles.
