Chris Jones & The Night Drivers - Blow Whistle

Bluegrass Band Chris Jones & The Night Drivers Deliver a Laid-Back Song “Blow Whistle”

Chris Jones & The Night Drivers, a highly regarded bluegrass band, have recently unveiled their latest single “Blow Whistle” (Mountain Home Music Company), a relaxed tempo song. According to the band’s bassist, Marshall Wilborn, the song was written a few years ago with a country shuffle rhythm in mind. However, in the hands and voice of Chris Jones, the song has evolved into a more laid-back, swing-inspired melody that emphasizes the song’s poignant lyrics.

The final product of this creative process features spare, evocative lyrics set to a relaxed swing feel that’s complemented by Tony Creasman‘s skillful drumming, Grace van’t Hof‘s baritone ukulele, and Mark Stoffel‘s mandolin, which offer brief counterpoints that frame Jones’ low, haunting vocals. Additionally, guest resonator guitarist, Billy Cardine, delivers an effortless-sounding solo that’s perfectly suited to the song’s mood.

Jones notes that he and Wilborn have played together in multiple bands and that he has always been a big admirer of Wilborn’s songwriting. While most of Wilborn’s songs recorded by other artists are older pieces, the band was thrilled to record a new one. During a show last year, Wilborn played “Blow Whistle” backstage for the group, and they immediately fell in love with it.
