Gitkin – Nowhere To Go But Everywhere (2023)
Gitkin, a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer hailing from the bustling metropolis of Brooklyn, New York, has unveiled his latest recording titled “Nowhere To Go But Everywhere”.
This album includes an enticing mix of global influences, incorporating Peruvian chicha (derived from cumbia), Tuareg-style Saharan desert blues, sensual Cuban son montuno, dub, southwestern border music, addictive African elements, psychedelic rock and various other world music styles. Notably, “Nowhere To Go But Everywhere” is mostly instrumental, featuring vintage keyboards and memorable guitars licks yet remains emotionally evocative, and prominently features the guitar as its driving force.
“Tesoro,” featuring Carol C, is the one of the few tracks with vocals, characterized by a deep Cuban flavor, with lyrics sung in Spanish. On this gorgeous piece, there is a sensual interplay between the alluring vocals and passionate guitar that ignites a desire to slow dance.
Gitkin is well known for his work with neofunk band Pimps of Joytime. On the song “We Will Meet again” he brings forth the funk side of music, delivering a delightful song with vocals, adorned with funk, neosoul and skillful guitar work.
“The album was recorded in my studio in the thick of the pandemic,” Gitkin says about the making of the record. “Though I try to think as little as possible when I’m creating, I was reflecting on a particular phase of my life in my early 20s. I was hitchhiking around the country, meditating, generally seeking adventure and something sacred. Somehow the essence of that journey crept into the record. Nowhere To Go But Everywhere is a quote from Jack Kerouac’s On The Road that fits the wanderlust spirit of the music.”
