Danûk, a musical collective comprised of exiled Middle Eastern musicians, has recently released the second single entitled ‘De Çêkin’ from their highly anticipated debut album titled Morîk. This musical offering is set to be unveiled to the public on May 19, 2023, under the auspices of Omni Sound.
The aforementioned single is a vibrant and rhythmic composition that showcases a Kurdish wedding song in all its grandeur. ‘De Çêkin’ captures the bride’s enthusiasm and excitement as she prepares for her nuptials, embodying the joyousness and festivities of this important cultural event.
It is worth noting that this piece has been expertly adapted from wax cylinders and discs that have been archived for over a century in two prestigious institutions, namely, The Berliner Phonogramm-Archiv and The Phonogrammarchiv of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. This feat of preserving and subsequently utilizing such a piece of cultural heritage is indeed a commendable achievement.
About the single, Danûk says: “This wedding song talks about the bride’s preparations for the wedding day. I chose this song because I love its rhythm (10/16), and it has a special dance called Koçeri (from a Kurdish clan) that has dance steps inspired by the movements of a bird.”
The upcoming album Morîk was produced by Michael League (Snarky Puppy) with the support of the British Arts Council, in League’s Studio 20.
All Bandcamp digital and physical pre-sale proceeds will be donated to DOZ e. V. to fundraise for victims of the 2023 Turkey-Syria Earthquakes.
