Afro Celt Sound System Founder Simon Emmerson Dies at 67

On March 13, 2023, Simon Emmerson, a renowned English record producer, composer, and guitarist, passed away. Emmerson was born on March 12, 1956, and had an impressive musical career, serving as the musical director at Lush and founding the critically acclaimed world music group Afro Celt Sound System. He was also instrumental in the creation of The Imagined Village, a collaborative project featuring various British roots artists, on which he played.

Emmerson’s production work extended beyond his own projects and included records for Baaba Maal and Manu Dibango. In fact, his production work on Baaba Maal’s album Firin’ in Fouta earned him a Grammy nomination in 1995.

Following Emmerson’s passing, Afro Celt Sound System released the following statement: “It’s with a heavy heart that we announce on Monday 13th March the peaceful passing of our dear Simon Emmerson, after a prolonged illness.

Simon touched the hearts of millions of people through his music and infinite wisdom. His legacy remains with the amazing people he bought together, and they will continue to create the magic of his music with his guidance from above.”

The statement also announced plans for a tribute memorial concert to honor Emmerson’s memory later in the year. Further details regarding the event will be released on all platforms.
