Logical Fleadh – Logical Fleadh (2023)
The decidedly upbeat album “Logical Fleadh” is a product of a collaboration between two bands, Tautologic (rock) and Character Fleadh (Irish/Scottish/Celtic folk), and a variety of noteworthy guests, such as violist Chuck Bontrager; Grammy-winning cellist Nick Photinos; Seán O’Riada Gold medal winner Seán Gavin; and Solas co-founder and accordionist John Williams.
This album has been a project 25 years in the making, beginning with Logical Fleadh’s leader Ethan Taylor Sellers attending an early Solas concert in Philadelphia. Captivated by their music’s precision, speed, and beauty, Sellers began exploring traditional Irish, Scottish, and Celtic music, even writing original compositions reflecting this influence for his rock band Tautologic.
After dabbling in Irish/Scottish music for over a decade, Sellers decided to pursue it seriously with his band Character Fleadh in 2009. Eventually, Tautologic members Emily Albright, Pat Buzby, and Nathan Britsch expressed interest in joining, and Logical Fleadh was created.
Following nearly two years of rehearsing and performing, Logical Fleadh recorded most of the album in a 2-day session at Rax Trax Recording in Chicago, with additional overdubs and contributions from the various guest musicians, including Tautologic’s electric guitarist Jay Montana. Grammy-nominated engineer Rick Barnes mixed and mastered the album.
The tracks on “Logical Fleadh” keeps the listener invested with its tantalizing mix of traditional Irish/Scottish tunes and songs with a driving rock rhythm section, providing a modern connection to Celtic tradition.
The album received funding from both the Illinois Arts Council and the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.
The band’s lineup includes Emily Albright (violin, vocals), Pat Buzby (drums), Nathan Britsch (bass), Dana Joras (flutes, piccolo, whistles), Joe Kilroy (tenor banjo, mandolin, bouzouki), and Ethan Sellers (acoustic guitar, keyboards, vocals), along with their special guests.
