Dom Flemons, the GRAMMY Award-winning musician and scholar also known as “The American Songster,” has released a new version of Bob Dylan’s “Guess I’m Doing Fine,” featuring special guest Sam Bush.
The song, which emphasizes resilience in the face of insurmountable odds, resonated with Flemons when he first heard it 20 years ago, and he felt compelled to add a fiddle part to highlight the strains of bluegrass in the song’s structure.
Flemons’ anticipated new album, Traveling Wildfire, produced by Ted Hutt and recorded at Los Angeles’ Kingsize Soundlabs, will be released on March 24 on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.
Traveling Wildfire, which features both original songs and new renditions of traditional folk songs, reflects on themes of Black love, survival, legacy, and growth, as Flemons addresses the current social climate.
The release will be followed by a tour, with shows in various locations across the US. In addition to special guest Sam Bush, the album features appearances by James Fearnley of The Pogues, and musicians David Hidalgo, Marc Orrell, and Matt Pynn.
Flemons’ fourth season of “American Songster Radio Show” on Nashville’s 650 AM WSM has also recently launched, and will focus on the music and inspiration behind “The Making of Traveling Wildfire.”
