Danûk, a collective of Middle Eastern musicians who were forced into exile, have announced their debut album, Morîk, set to release on May 19, 2023, via Omni Sound. In conjunction with the announcement, the group also unveiled the lead single, “Axir Zemana.”
The album was produced by Michael League, a five-time Grammy award-winning artist from Snarky Puppy, at his Studio 20 with support from the British Arts Council. This album is the second release from Omni Sound, a label based in Istanbul and New York City, following the recent release of the Sun Ra Arkestra album, Living Sky.
All proceeds from the Bandcamp digital and physical pre-sales will be donated to DOZ e.V. to aid the victims of the 2023 Turkey-Syria Earthquakes.
Snarky Puppy’s Michael League who produced the album explains further about how the album came together: “the recording of Morîk was incredibly special for me. Aside from the historical and cultural significance of recording songs never before committed to modern recording methods, it meant a lot to me personally to have the pleasure of spending this experience with an incredible group of musicians and people. Tarik has been one of my closest friends and teachers for years, and helping him and Ferhad (also a friend for many years) represent Kurdish culture in this way is one of the great honors of my life. I hope that the music wins the heart of its listeners as it has won mine.“
