Sofia Vaina (Σοφία Βαϊνά) was born in Veroia, Greece in 1970. She is a Greek composer, lyricist, vocalist, arranger, pianist and violinist. She studied Special Harmony and Special Counterpoint at the Municipal Conservatory of Veria, in norther Greece, with musician and writer Dimitris Athanasiadis (former director of the Macedonian Conservatory of Thessaloniki).
She also studied piano at the Municipal Conservatory of Veria with the piano teacher Popi Hatzidimou-Theofanous and violin in the Modern Conservatory of Thessaloniki with violin professor Mikis Michaelidis (formerly director of the Thessaloniki State Orchestra). Additionally, Sofia Vaina participated in the Thessaloniki Chamber Music Choir in the Modern Conservatory of Thessaloniki with the master Anastasia Koumpaki. Later, Sofia Vaina completed jazz song lessons with the singer and pianist Nikos Pitsikas.
After successful exams at the Ministry of Education in Greece, she worked as a high school teacher of music. Moreover, she worked as a private music teacher, focusing on theory and piano.
In the last years, Sofia Vaina has written lyrics, composed music, orchestrated works and performed professionally as a vocalist in various bands.
She released her first solo album, “Sofia Vaina,” in 2011 on Music Gallery Records.
After participating in various international music competitions, she won nine music awards, including Hollywood Songwriting, Hollywood Music in Media Awards (HMMA), Clouzine International Music Awards, American Tracks Music Awards International, and the UK Songwriting Contest 2019.
Her compositions are rooted in traditional music, delivered in a more contemporary way. She has also written songs such as ballads, pop, rock and alternative music.
The main musical influences are her classical music training and later listening to the songs she heard in the seventies when she was a little girl.
