Helsinki-based progressive folk band Vimma have released their new single, ‘Antrasiitille,’ their first since the band’s debut album in 2019. The song combines world music with progressive rock and spoken word. Notably, Vimma create a massive sound with unique arrangements, while leaving room for artistic interpretation and improvisation. The band’s music is primarily composed by producer and violinist Pessi Jouste.
“It’s a blessing to be in a band where someone has a classical background, someone has a metal background and someone has a street dance past. In the muse of passion, everything has room to be in an equal dialogue. I guess it’s also a bit in the brains of young people these days that when all the fun has already been done, the new fun is that they live in harmony with each other,” says lyricist Eeva Rajakangas about the new music.
“Vimma” is a Finnish word for fury and excitement that represents the passion of artists to imagine utopian worlds and awaken their audience to bring change to a more sustainable future. Current issues lyrics and spoken poetry bring extra vitality and excitement to the energetic music. In ‘Antrasiitille,’ the band reflects on the current world events: climate change and the trade of fossil fuels with Russia. This piece of music is a statement that highlights the injustice in the world.
“We’re not really trying to make folk music or renew it. We want to do freely. It is important to show that folk music also lives in cities and that young musicians are constantly shaping it to suit their own times. It is not stuck in a certain time or place,” says keyboardist Aino Kallio.
