M. Chuzi – Papara (Sdban Ultra / N.E.W.S NV, 2022)
Papara is the debut album from Brussels-based collective M. Chuzi. The title refers to the ancient tradition on the isle of Crete of dipping your bread in different sauces and dips called “papara”. Thus, M. Chuzi invites the listener to dip their ears into the sonic sauces that are provided by its versatile menu.
The ensemble’s first recording presents savory sauces that include a mix of Afrobeat and other Afro-rooted rhythms, funk, and progressive jazz combined with electronic soundscapes.
