World music conference, WOMEX, has announced the first set of jury-selected showcase artists. The acts are set to perform at WOMEX 2022 in Lisbon on October 19 – 23, 2022. Notably, the 23 showcase artists confirmed today represent 24 countries.
The artists announced today include Venezuelan joropo, Argentine chacarera, and Peruvian waltz performed by Aguamadera (Argentina/France); emerging flamenco sensation, singer Israel Fernández (Spain); folklore from the Maghreb mixed with Gnawa rock and electropop by Djazia Satour (Algeria/France); Sara Correia (Portugal): the rising fado star who grew up in a family of fadistas; The Dizzy Brains (Madagascar), four musicians with a garage-rock sound spreading their music beyond their native Madagascar to vent their anger against social injustice; as well as Lagos-based Etuk Ubong & The Etuk Philosophy (Nigeria), Afrobeat-rooted, hard bop-influenced trumpeter, who reaches back to the great Tunde Williams (a founder member of Fela Kuti‘s influential band Africa 70 in the 1960s); and many more.
Pilani Bubu (South Africa) stated: “I am really excited to be part of a long legacy of artists who have showcased at WOMEX, representing authentic South African sounds and stories.
