The annual series Flamenco Viene Del Sur (Flamenco Comes from the south) is back. Concerts will be taking place throughout June 2022, featuring top flamenco singers and guitarists, as well as conferences under the title Vermut Flamenco. Concerts and conferences will take place at Teatro Central in Seville.

Prado del Rey to Host Cante por Serranas National Contest
Flamenco, as a cultural expression and hallmark of Andalusia, will be once more the protagonist of one of the essential events of the Cadiz summer, the National Contest of Cante por Serranas de Prado del Rey. It is a unique event, which is committed to the recovery and conservation of a “virtually lost” flamenco cante (flamenco song style), which is the serrana.
Prado del Rey’s culture delegate, Isabel Blanco explained that it is open to all singers over the age of 16 who wish to do so, except for the winners of the last five editions. It will have two phases: first, the Selective Phase, which will take place on July 1 and 8, depending on the number of participants. And the Grand Final on August 26. All participants, both in the Selective test and in the Final, will have to sing a serrana and a free cante.
As for the prizes, the first winner will receive 2,000 euros and a badge; the second, 1,400 and badge; Whoever wins the Juan Nadales Prize for Free Cante will receive 1,200 euros and a badge; and the winner of the José Luis Rivero special prize will be awarded 500 euros. There will also be awards for the fourth and fifth finalists.
The deadline for submitting applications to register for the contest is open until June 20.
This XLVI edition of the Concurso Nacional de Cante por Serranas will culminate in the performance of the show by famed flamenco singer Argentina, which will be held the day after the Grand Final, on August 27, as part of the ‘Flamenco comes from the South’ series promoted by the Andalusian regional government. The winner of the contest will accompany Argentina on stage.
Guitarist José Almarcha Premieres the Music Video “Tangos de las Vinalias”
Flamenco guitarist José Almarcha has just released the music video “Tangos de las Vinalias” (flamenco tangos), a single included in his latest album “Alejandra“, which evokes the ancient Roman harvest festivals, “las vinalias”, a song that refers directly to his hometown (Tomelloso), in which the harvest is the main and fundamental engine in the life of the town located in La Mancha.
In these flamenco tangos, Almarcha collaborates with Sara Dénez and Sandra Carrasco on vocals, both masterfully performing the verses of Emilio Florido, composer from Cádiz.
Cristian De Moret to Present “Caballo Rojo” Live
Singer, guitarist and producer Cristian De Moret will be presenting his new album “Caballo Rojo” throughout Spain. A few weeks ago, Cristian premiered a savory music video featuring “Veneno” (poison), the second single taken from “Caballo Rojo”. The video focuses on the force of the forbidden and the emotionally toxic.
On “Caballo Rojo”, Cristian continues his explorations of jazz, blues and flamenco.

Cristina Heeren Foundation Extends Registration Period for Flamenco Talent 2022 Contests until June 15
The Cristina Heeren Foundation for Flamenco Art, together with Acciona, has extended the registration deadline for the Talento Flamenco Contests. Artists will have until June 15 to register through the online forms for the three categories of the contest: singing, dancing and accompanying guitar (www.flamencoheeren.com/concursos). The contest is open to performers between 16 and 30 years old, regardless of residence or nationality.
With the aim of facilitating the monitoring and dissemination of the contest, the Cristina Heeren Foundation will broadcast the final galas of the contest via streaming, so that it can be followed on its YouTube channel and official profiles on the Foundation’s social networks (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram).
Cash prizes and Acciona Scholarships
For the sixth consecutive year, the Cristina Heeren Foundation, together with Acciona, is making an enormous effort to endow the prizes for these Flamenco Talent Contests. Specifically, the prizes in each of the categories are 1,400 euros for the First Prize; 900 euros for the Second Prize; 600 euros for the Third Prize and 100 euros for the Fourth and Fifth Finalists.
In addition, Acciona will award a total of six scholarships -Acciona Flamenco Talent Scholarships-, for tuition fees for the annual course at the Fundación Cristina Heeren de Arte Flamenco, valued at 5,000 euros each, as well as a meal scholarship. In addition to these six scholarships, and as a novelty this year, Acciona awards another two Practicum Scholarships to students who were recipients of the scholarships in the 2021-2022 academic year to enable them to continue training for another academic year at the Foundation’s School.
Throughout all its editions, the Flamenco Talent Contests have promoted the training of around 60 emerging artists and have awarded nearly a hundred aspiring new talents in singing, dancing and guitar.

Flamenco Music, the Focus of June 2022’s Inclusive Concerts at Madrid Shelters
The SGAE Foundation, through the Territorial Council of the SGAE in Madrid, is collaborating with the celebration of Conciertos Inclusivos (Inclusive Concerts), a social initiative organized by Equipo e2 that presents live acoustic performances at church shelters, soup kitchens and prisons in the Madrid region in order to bring music closer to groups at risk of exclusion.
The project will be celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2022 with performances throughout June by the multidisciplinary artist from Cádiz, Elemara on Wednesday, June 8 at the Albergue San Juan de Dios at 6:00 p.m.; and flamenco guitarist Javi Cerezo on Thursday, June 9 at the Fundación Benéfica-Albergue San Martín de Porres at 6:00 p.m.
Open mic sessions
Increasingly, Inclusive Concerts are becoming a collective creative space. Many attendees at these concerts are encouraged to participate and sing along with the artists, ranging from collective improvisation to their own creations.
About the artists
Elemara
Elena Macías was born in Cádiz in 1982. She grew up among flamenco songs performed by her father. At the age of 10, she learned how to play the guitar.
She started to sing in her school choir since she was a child and at the age of 14 she started to compose her own songs. In 2012, she moved to Madrid and began her relationship with the Yllana theater company, which manages the Alfil Theater and with other companies linked to it. This led to a collaboration with musician and actor Miguel Magdalena “Peri”, a member of the RonLalá theater company (awarded several Max Awards).
Her first solo concert in Madrid was at the Teatro Alfil itself in 2015 under the stage name Elemara. She also collaborates with the Electrik Five Experience project. Together with Miguel Magdalena, she produced her first EP, Caminando, mixed by Guillermo Gutiérrez, featuring musicians Roberto Pacheco and Samuel Martín Bona, among others. In 2018, she created the group El Sur that performs pop and flamenco.
Javier Cerezo
With his latest album, Sin Fronteras, Javier Cerezo is working to keep alive the tradition of the Catalan Camargue rumba from France. He is one of the few remaining exponents of this genre, performing Corsican songs and Flamenco songs live.

Lo Ferro Festival 2022
Flamenco Festival Lo Ferro will take place from July 16 to July 24 in Torre Pacheco, Murcia. This year’s poster, designed by Sebastián Escudero Ortega, grandson of the festival’s founder, shows Camarón’s palmas (handclaps) marking the rhythm and paying homage to the agricultural heritage of this town that was founded around a mill.

Coinciding with the recent Romería del Rocío 2022 religious pilgrimage, acclaimed flamenco singer Argentina has released co singer has released the single “Los Ángeles propusieron” (LP Flamenco, 2022). Notably, Argentina delves into the sevillanas musical genre in a special and extraordinary way with her voice to make a prayer and homage to the Virgen del Rocío. Composer and guitarist Fernando Iglesias “Mae” composed “Los Ángeles propusieron” expressly for Argentina.
Argentina wants to bring to the whole world her way of understanding the Pilgrimage of the Virgen del Rocío (also known as Madonna of El Rocío or Our Lady of El Rocío) with her voice, her intention in each word and in each phrase that comes from the heart; she wants the listener to feel what it’s like to be inside the famous and highly popular Pilgrimage, within all the magical moments that are lived in devotion, faith, music and art.
The lineup includes Argentina on vocals; Fernando Iglesias “Mae” on guitars; Manolo Nieto on electric bass; and Agustin Henke on percussion.
