Oumou Sangaré Unveils New Song and Video on International Women’s Day

Malian star and feminist role model Oumou Sangaré has released her new single ‘Wassulu Don’ to coincide with International Women’s Day on March 8, 2022. The track mixes Oumou’s characteristic Malian sound and voice with elements of blues and rock to create a jubilant groove. It is a demonstration of hometown pride for Wassulu, an area in the southwestern corner of Mali where Oumou’s family originates from. The accompanying video, directed by Justyna Obasi and filmed in Accra, Ghana, features a series of scenes of modern African women celebrating and flourishing in their own hometown communities.

Oumou says about ‘Wassulu Don’: “I am very happy to present my new single on the important date of International Women’s Day! This song is for and about the people of Wassulu in Mali: we have reached a dazzling achievement by turning our dear Wassulu into a shelter for peace thanks to huge investment. We are leading the way in Mali. Let’s go to Wassulu, where hospitality, the good life and great events are blossoming. Come with me to Wassulu, where joy is everything!”

Sangaré is set to release her new album ‘Timbuktu’ on April 29, 2022. Recorded in multiple locations (United States, Mali, and France) and co-produced by Pascal Danaë and Nicolas Quéré, ‘Timbuktu’ is the Malian singer’s first new material since 2017’s critically acclaimed album ‘Mogoya’.
