Hyväluoma Group – Reflection (Lusti Music, 2017)
On the album “Reflection”, fiddler and composer Tero Hyväluoma and his band take the listener on a wild instrumental musical ride where traditional music meets jazz, electronica, progressive rock structures, chamber classical music and much more.
“Bulgarian Punishment” is a thrilling high-speed piece exhibiting dazzling musicianship. Meanwhile, “Infotron Obsession” elegantly combines acoustic instruments and electronics.
“High School Highbrow” has an exquisite Finnish folk flavor displaying wonderful interactions between the fiddle, piano and accordion plus a handful of quirky, exploratory excursions.
On “Vekkula Survivor”, the ensemble shifts to contemporary jazz piano, mesmerizing accordion and violin, with brilliant acoustic bass solo lines and creative drumming.
The track “Scandinavian Overture” masterfully brings together Nordic folk essences and finely designed progressive rock.
The frenzied jazz returns on wild “Goblin Chase”, a jazz fusion piece made primarily with acoustic instruments and powerful drums.
“Weissmullerwise” treats the listener to evocative accordion along with plucked and bowed fiddle joined by jazz piano and drums. Despite the title of the track, the tune has a Celtic vibe and progresses in intensity.
The last piece, “Hang In The Balance” slows the down the pace. It is a beautiful and melancholic composition highlighting the beauty of Tero Hyväluoma’s violin.
The lineup includes Tero Hyväluoma on violin; Harri Kuusijärvi on accordion; Matias Tyni on piano; Vesa Ojaniemi on double bass; and Jesse Ojajärv on drums.
