The Varied Sounds of the Byzaanchy

Choduraa Tumat – Byzaanchy (Pan Records, 2021)

The album Byzaanchy features 14 tracks of traditional songs from Tuva, performed by Choduraa Tumat accompanied by a musical instrument called byzaanchy. The byzaanchy is a traditional bowed string instrument from Tuva, with a history that dates back centuries.

Four different byzaanchy instruments that were made by different master luthiers appear on this CD. The intention of this album is to popularize the Tuvan byzaanchy, and to make the repertoire available, as well as for independent students of Tuvan music; for instrument history; or just for listening.

Choduraa Tumat is a singer of traditional songs and khöömei (throat-singing) and an independent scholar. She is the leader of all-female throat-singing ensemble Tyva Kyzy.

The Byzaanchy CD booklet includes lyrics in English, Tuvan and Russian.
