Gambian singer, kora master, and multi-instrumentalist Sona Jobarteh is set to perform on Sunday, March 20, 2022 at Peter Norton Symphony Space in Manhattan, New York. The concert is part of the World Music Institute’s Women’s Voices.
Sona Jobarteh is a pioneering musician who aims to preserve her rich cultural heritage and make it accessible in a modern style that appeals to audiences all over the world.
Born into a jeli (griot) family, Sona Jobarteh is the first female artist within the more than 700-year old tradition to become a professional virtuoso on the kora. She is also known and admired for her dedication to educational reform as the Founding Director of The Gambia Academy.
Sona’s discography includes Afro Acoustic Soul (2008), Motherland: The Score (2010) and Fasiya (2011).
The Women’s Voices series celebrates the role that female artists play in the preservation and promotion of their respective cultures and traditions.
