Influential Puerto Rican Percussionist Héctor “Tito” Matos Dies at 53

Acclaimed percussionist, educator, and Puerto Rican culture disseminator Héctor “Tito” Matos passed away on January 18, 2022. Tito Matos specialized in performing and promoting two traditional Puerto Rican musical genres: bomba and plena.

Prominent Puerto Rican radio producer, Transglobal World Music Chart panelist and world music disseminator Benjamín Muñiz said about Tito Matos: “He was one of the most important innovators of plena, especially with his work with Viento de Agua, while cultivating in great detail the most traditional and popular roots of the genre.”

Héctor “Tito” Matos is survived by his wife, Mariana Reyes Angleró and three children: Héctor, Celiana and Marcelo.

Apart from being an amazing talent and intellectual, and a super important ambassador, educator, historian of puerto rican music, culture, and folklore, he was the most genuine, down to earth person with an extremely generous and kind spirit, and a wonderful neighbor and representative of Santurce. QEPD. May he rest in peace and plena.

  3. During Hectors life I was fortunate enough to have been in the presence of Hector the artist during his most prolific performances and for that, as person of Puerto Rican heritage, am eternally grateful and blessed. Love you Hermano.
