Groundbreaking Chinese Mountain Music

Shanren – Shan Dao (Pollux, 2021)

Shan Dao is the third album from Shanren (山人乐队), one of the leading world music bands from China. The name of the multi-ethnic band means mountain men. Band leader Qu Zihan and other band members grew up in mountainous regions of southwestern China and play an innovative form of Chinese music that incorporates traditional music as well as modern elements such as rock drums and bass, psychedelia, reggaeton, pop, electronics, and funk beats.

Shanren uses musical instruments rarely found in modern bands, such as the xianzi (3-string lute of the Yi ethnic group), bawu (flute shaped reed instrument of the Hani people), kouxian (jaw harp), and the dabiya (plucked instrument of the Nu ethnic group in Yunnan).

Many of the fascinating songs on Shan Dao are based on traditional melodies from ethnic groups of the Yunnan province of China as well as original material composed by Qu.

The band members represents various ethnic groups from Yunnan, including multi-instrumentalist Qu Zihan (Han), bassist Sigao Ala (Yi); multi-instrumentalist Fu Te (Bouyei); and Ou Jianyun (Han). Shanren’s percussionist is British musician Sam Debell.
