Iconic Festival Suma Flamenca Opens Today in Madrid

Suma Flamenca festival in Madrid, one of the leading Flamenco festivals in Spain, begins today at 7:45 p.m. in the Sala Verde venue at Teatros del Canal with a performance by Madrid guitarist Víctor Monge “Serranito.” The renowned guitarist has announced his retirement from the stage after 65 years of experience, so this will be a unique opportunity to enjoy his mastery of the guitar.

Serranito is one of the 200 artists who will perform in the 37 shows that Suma Flamenca has programmed, under the direction of Antonio Benamargo, until next November 7, 2021 in fifteen stages in the city of Madrid and its region.

Wednesday, October 20, Teatros del Canal in Madrid, Sala Verde, 7:45 p.m.

The premiere of Ópera flamenca, by cantaor Israel Fernández and guitarist Diego del Morao. The show refers to a Flamenco period that lasted from the mid-1920s to the mid-1950s, when Flamenco became a massively popular genre, with performers such as Chacón, La Niña de los Peines, Manuel Torre and Manolo Caracol.

Thursday, October 21, Teatros del Canal in Madrid , Sala Verde, 7:45 p.m.

Pansequito and Aurora Vargas, living legends of cante, will present Virtud flamenca (Flamenco virtue), a work full of Cadiz personality and Sevillian power, testimony of those who have dedicated their lives to flamenco with no more pretensions that providing enjoyment to audiences.

Friday, October 22

Suma Flamenca will present four concerts at various venues.

José Valencia’s Con jerarquía, Real Coliseo de Carlos III in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, 7:00 p.m.

Cantaor (singer) José Valencia will present new songs with lyrics by Rafael Fernández Suárez “El Nene”.

Gerardo Núñez, A través del tiempo, Sala Verde, 7:45 p.m.

Acclaimed guitarist and composer Gerardo Núñez will premiere A través del tiempo (Through Time), a summary of his career.

Ezequiel Benítez, Centro Comarcal de Humanidades Sierra Norte La Cabrera (Madrid región), 8:00 p.m.

Singer Ezequiel Benítez will premiere Del Sur al cielo, a show that celebrates top Flamenco artists who triumphed in Madrid.

Jesús Méndez and Rancapino Chico, Paco Rabal Cultural Center in Madrid, 8:00 p.m.

Famed singers Jesús Méndez and Rancapino Chico join forces in the show De Chiclana a Jerez.

Saturday, October 23

Four of the five shows on Saturday 23 are dedicated to Flamenco dance.

Ana Crismán, Royal Monastery of Santa María de El Paular, 1:30 p.m.

Ana Crismán will tour deep Flamenco music with harp, performing various Flamenco styles, featuring her own original compositions along with material from other composers adapted to harp.

Suma Flamenca does not neglect younger spectators. The show Flamenco Kids at Cuarta Pared Theater in Madrid, at 5.30 p.m. will present Flamenco to children with play and fun.

Alfonso Losa, Teatros del Canal in Madrid, Sala Verde, 6.30 p.m.

Dancer Alfonso Losa will closes the first week of festival events with his new show, Flamenco: Espacio Creativo, a suite of dance, singing, and Flamenco guitar, in which Losa dances with classic and modern forms that refer to the masters of Flamenco dance.
