Greek World Fusion from the Island of Paros

Giorgos Ventouris – Hohlakas (Violins Productions, 2019)

The album “Hohlakas” from Greek double-bass player Giorgos Ventouris brought together some of Greece’s greatest musicians from the jazz and world music scenes. “Hohlakas” means “pebble” and it is also the name of a remote beach on the island of Paros, the home of Giorgos Ventouris.

The 14 compositions combine melodic and rhythmic elements from the folk traditions of Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean with contemporary harmony and improvisation.

“Hohlakas” features folk instruments such as the pear-shaped lyra, qanun, and lauto, masterfully combined with piano, flute and double-bass.
