Artist Profiles: Galandum Galundaina

Galandum Galundaina was founded in the early 2000s. The group explores the traditional music of
Miranda do Douro in northeastern Portugal, right next to the Spanish border.

The award-winning ensemble uses traditional musical instruments many of which are built or modified by the musicians themselves.

The lineup in 2021 included Paulo Meirinhos on vocals, bombo, gaita de foles (bagpipe), traditional percussion; Paulo Preto on vocals, gaita de foles mirandesa (Mirandese bagpipe), sanfona, flauta pastoril (shepherd’s flute) and tamboril; Alexandre Meirinhos on vocals, caixa de guerra, traditional percussion; and João Pratas on vocals, flauta pastoril , flauta de osso, tamboril, psaltery, flute, bombo, pandeiro mirandês, and charrascas.
