Sakili’s Creole Sounds from the Indian Ocean

Sakili is a band from Rodrigues island in the Indian Ocean. Sakili is set to release Creole Sounds from the Indian Ocean (ARC Music) on March 26, 2021.

Sakili performs a combination of waltzes, polkas, mazurka, and séga drum rhythms that were originally performed by slaves at sunset, reminding them of their African homeland.

Séga is known as the “blues” of the Indian Ocean. From the 17th-19th century, slaves from Africa and Madagascar, were transported against their will to Mauritius and Rodrigues, and gradually forged their own identity in this land of exile. Music was created around bonfires at night during moments of weary rest.

Sakili includes Vallen Pierre Louis on kabossy, vocals; Francis Prosper on tanbour frame drum, vocals; and Ricardo Legentil on accordion, vocals.
