Wixárika Musician Muwieri Xaure Releases Hikuri Yuawi Iyarieya

Mexican artist Muwieri Xaure (also known as Eusebio López in Spanish) is a longstanding traditional Wixárika musician and former leader of the community of La Laguna, San Andrés Cohamiata.

The Wixáritari (plural of Wixárika) are indigenous to the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range in northwestern Mexico and have existed there for over 15,000 years. In that time they have developed a rich cultural tradition in which “hikuri” (commonly called peyote in Spanish, a spineless cactus that contains hallucinogen mescaline) plays an essential role as a healing medicine.

In this rare recording, Muwieri Xaure introduces a new collection of original songs that unify the musical traditions of his native San Andrés and Santa Catarina while also expressing his relationship with Mexican culture.

Through a collaboration with Transitory Tapes, “Hikuri Yuawi Iyarieya” will be available on limited-edition cassette on March 28th.
