Cosmopolitan Grooves and Seductive Guitar

Carlos Cortés Bustamante – Vínculos (La Mar Sonora, 2021)

Vinculos (links in Spanish) is the first solo album from Spanish guitarist, composer, producer and world traveler Carlos Cortés Bustamante. The Cádiz-born artist grew up in southern Spain, immersed in flamenco tradition, but he also lived in Havana (Cuba) for a little while and traveled throughout the Mediterranean region and Morocco.  All these influences appear in Vinculos.

The instrumental album combines flamenco tradition with Cuban music and influences from North Africa, just across the sea from Cadiz, the southernmost Spanish province. There are also jazz and exquisite chamber music, Andalusian folk music, Spanish classical, and Andean music elements.

Although the Spanish guitar is Carlos’ main instrument, he also plays lutes wonderfully.

The lineup includes Carlos Cortés Bustamante on Spanish guitar, lutes and percussion; Enrique Oliver on tenor sax; Fernando Brox on trombone, flute and piccolo; Daniel Dominguez on drums; Joan Masana on double bass; Joaquin Sánchez on clarinet, bass clarinet, flute and Bulgarian kaval; Mario Navas on violin; Manuel Moreno on viola; Alejandro Martinez on cello; Juan Baca on fretted double bass; Carlos Fernández Campos on Iberian lute, pandero de verdiales and cymbals;  and Daniel Amat on piano.
