Trailblazing Hong Kong Fusion

SIU2 – Kon Fusion (Flower Music, 2010)

Kon Fusion is an EP of instrumental music from Hong Kong’s leading fusion band. The group is known for its exciting mix of Chinese traditional music and jazz-rock fusion. All the songs in Kon Fusion are rooted in western classical music forms such as sonatas and waltzes that are transformed by SIU2 into unrecognizable fascinating tunes where piano, muscular drum kit and powerful electric bass are interweaved with Chinese instruments such as sheng, sanxian, and zheng.

SIU2’s leader is composer, arranger, keyboardist and sheng master Ng Cheuk Yin. The sheng plays an essential role in the band’s sound. The sheng is an ancient Chinese mouth blown free reed instrument with several vertical pipes.

Members: Ng Cheuk Yin on sheng and electric organ; Jason Lau on zheng (plucked zither); Cass Lam on sanxian (lute); Peter Fan on piano; Liang Chun-Wai on bass; and Melchior Sarreal on drums.
