A Masterful Modern Touch to Ancient Indian Traditions

Falu & Karyshma – Someday (Monsoon Records, 2020)

Falu & Karyshma is a group of Indian musicians who migrated to the United States and play world fusion. The quartet recreates Indian classical ragas, traditional thumri folk songs and Sufi ghazals by adding finely-crafted Western and modern music elements.

The profound Indian essence on their EP Someday comes from Falu’s beautiful Indian-language vocals and lyricism along with Sandeep’s tabla and Gaurav’s Indian flutes. Soumya, who grew up in Texas, adds a bluesy Americana component with his guitar and mandolin.

The lineup includes Falu on lead vocals; Sandeep on tabla, percussion, programming, pots and pans; Soumya on violin, guitars, mandolin, bass, and vocals; and Gaurav on vocals, flute, and harmonium.
