The Magnetic Electric Tehardent Sound of Al Bilali Soudan

Al Bilali Soudan – Tombouctou (Clermont Music, 2020)

Timbuktu-based Al Bilali Soudan plays a form of Tuareg music that predates the now familiar desert blues. Their music style is called Takamba, and revolves around the use of an ancient lute that is also known as ngoni and tidinit in other parts of Western Africa.

On Tombouctou (Timbuktu), Al Bilali Soudan perform fast paced trance-like music featuring vocals, electrified hypnotic tehardent and calabash percussion.

The lineup on the album includes Abellaw Yattara on vocals and lead terhadent; Aboubacrine Yattara on bass terhadent; Mohamed Ag Abellaw on vocals and terhadent; Thialé Ag Aboubacrine on calabash; and Hamadoun Afo Gundo on calabash.
